obama was elected president. but today was the day that the obama administration made the single biggest play to define what comes next. today, he nominated chuck hagel, in doing, he nominated the first vietnam veteran. >> he understands that sending young americans to fight and bleed in the dirt and mud, that is something we only do when it is absolutely necessary. my frame of reference, he has said, is geared to the guy at the bottom who is doing the fighting and the dying. with chuck, our troops will always know just like sergeant hagel was there for his own brother, secretary hagel will be there for you. and finally, chuck represents the bipartisan tradition that we need more of in washington. for his independence, and commitment to consensus, he has earned the respect of national security and military leaders, republicans and democrats, including me. >> hagel will be the third republican secretary of defense appointed by the last two democratic presidents. william cohen, and bob gates, re-appointed by president obama in 2009. and chuck hagel is a republican senator from nebraska. th

estimation. so i think this is as much about precluding where they see the obama administration going as it is about this nomination. >> john: and that he wants to change the pentagon on an constitutional level. joe, your thoughts? >> well, my thoughts, yes that's exactly right. he's going to change the pentagon as an institution because as a former senator he knows the ins and outs of how the budget process works knows how to get the numbers down. he and obama are kindred spirits. and they both kind of have the same world-view. they both are willing to be contrary to their own party loyalties. they're both willing to do the tough decisions to make decisions that won't necessarily be popular with their own people and get it done for the good of the country. so i think hagel brings credibility to that position, not only as somebody who has been a long-time public servant but someone who understands military culture and who has actually been there. that credibility is going to go a long way. i think from the white house perspective this could be a bit of muscle flexing for the second-te

in that case why hasn't the obama administration done more to help achieve that? i think the answer is because the obama administration is still desperate to find a way to negotiate with iran over the nuclear weapons program. i know if we were to get involved in the conflict against sa assad there would be no way the iranians would negotiate. >> what can the administration do? >> i don't think there's much they can do as long as they are not willing to take on russia and iran. the reset button has worked out well as we can see here. the administration is hosted by fat tar. >> good to see you. seems our fighting with continue with assad in place. >>> eric, thanks. there are growing concerns the deadly flu outbreak is sweeping across the country and there is high demand causing vaccine shortages not to worry, though. we will have all of the tips you need on the best way to protect yourself. police confronted suspected gunman inside a movie theater. tell you what happened when we come back. caring for their lives and lives of others one of the officers fired at the suspect striking the suspect. h

unattractive, the obama administration needs to see if there is a path through which it can pressure iran to make a deal. in a thoughtful essay in the current issue of "foreign affairs" the columbia scholar jurvis points out that this kind of coercive diplomacy, at least from washington, has rarely worked. he points out in panama, 1989, iraq, 1990, serbia, 1998, afghanistan, 2001 and iraq, 2003, washington tried sanctions pressure and the threat of force to get leaders to change course, it didn't work. and washington had to make good on its threat to go to war. with north korea, coercive diplomacy also failed, but in this case, washington decided against military action choosing, instead, to contain the regime. making coercive diplomacy requires a mix of threats and promises. with regard to iran, the administration has made the threats plenty of times. with clarity and credibility. but while the sticks have been handled shrewdly, the carrots have not. the united states is unable to define for itself or for the world what would be an acceptable deal and, most importantly, what it is willin

on the advisory board means he's had some input into the obama administration's decision making on national security issues. >> we mentioned across the aisle there are democratic lawmaker who also have problems with hagel partly because of the israel issues, but what's the back story there? >> in 1998 the blunt-spoken mr. hagel made comments about a man president clinton had serve, the first openly gay ambassador and hagel described him as openly aggressively gay. he issued an apology and he told that he never received the apology, just the media did. and gay and lesbian advocacy groups are weighing in and count on the spectacle that official washington loves, the knockdown, dragout confirmation battle. it will be interesting, james rosen, thank you. >> thank you. >> your health insurance rates could be going up by double digits. providing to increase premiums despite the obama administration's new health care law and succeeding. as you know may know the the affordable health care act was meant to stop the rising costs of health care and the people who do not have employer provided insuranc

for that report. >>> the obama administration may be stepping up its push for some form of new gun control legislation. but will the president be able to rally the support of congress? most importantly, the american public at the same time? we'll dig deeper with our chief political analyst gloria borger. here's what the president recently said on "meet the press." i'll play the clip. >> we're not going to get this done unless the american people decide it's important. and so this is not going to be simply a matter of me spending political capital. one of the things that you learn, having now been in this office for four years, is the old adage of public opinion. without public opinion there's not something you can't do and wut it there's very little you can't get done in this town. i'm going to be putting my full weight behind it. >> now, remind our viewers why so many democrats have been reluctant to even talk about gun control over these past several years. >> yeah. it's almost 20 years, wolf. it goes back to 1994. that was the big election which republicans took control of the congress.

because we have some confidence that the obama administration, if it comes to it, we'll do it. if it's necessary. a lot of the people who supported president obama said, "mark my words. he is a man of his word, he does this quite seriously." then he turns around and appoints perhaps the most prominent skeptic of any kind of military intervention in iran as his defense secretary. if you're sitting in israel, you're wondering just how reliable is the united states and maybe we should go it alone. so, for that reason alone, simply the appointment of chuck hagel is going to make the israelis more skiddish and perhaps more prone to act. >> here's the irony. who said that military action against iran could prove catastrophic? that was robert gates. our former defense secretary. who said that it could embroil us in a conflict that we can forget? that was leon panetta. it was true, bret, i think you are right that we need the military option on the table as hagel has repeatedly said. that does not mean we can't have a public conversation in this country about the tremendous dangers that war

of the obama administration? i mean keeping out in front of the public obviously is going to be a big part of this happening. and of course ramping up pressure on lawmakers to make the change. we have also seen the national rifle association in recent week take some very aggressive steps to protect their backyard, so to speak, the way they're trying -- giving clinics to arm -- to teach teachers in some states such as ohio and utah, how to use firearms in this discussion of firearms in schools. so how does the obama administration in your opinion make sure that this is a top priority and that the mitch mcconnells of the world can be politically overrun? >> i do believe this is a leadership moment. i think it's a leadership moment for our president. i'm pleased that the steps that he has taken with the biden group. i think they are headed in the right direction. i believe they have a good panel of experts, which includes law enforcement officers from around the country. but it is a leadership moment. and it's really, ed, not a republican issue, it's not a i'm pleased that the steps that he h

this says the second term of the obama administration when it comes to dealing with iran will look very much like the first. the difference is iranians have that much more enriched-uranium and they're that much closer to acquiring a nuclear weapon. this is critical choice other allies around the world will be looking at. jon: we didn't even get to john brennan but we'll leave it there. bret stevens from the "wall street journal". >> good to be here. jon: thank you. jenna: turning to the growing debate over gun control in the wake of the connecticut school shooting. the white house now reportedly considering a slew of new measures including reinstituting a assault weapons ban, background checks and a database that could track gun sales nationwide as lawmakers from both sides of the issue dig in on both sides. >> we need a comprehensive approach and look at all the different elements. because a particular effort won't prevent something in one particular incident doesn't mean you might not do anything to help in other incidents. >> you remember, bad guys aren't stupid. they are just bad. if the

in washington continues to turn. and cabinet secretary has resigned out of the obama administration. who was it? well tell you in just a few moments. first, we'll go to out to los angeles, our current news update with lisa ferguson. >> hey peter. good morning bill. good morning everyone. more gun debate as vice president joe biden takes on a new round of meetings along with attorney general eric holder. first they'll speak with wildlife and sporting groups at 11:45 this morning. on to gun owner's groups including the nra and representatives from the entertainment industry this evening. kathleen sebelius wills attend some of the meetings. it is a big step for president obama's new gun violence task force launched in the wake of the massacre at sandy hook elementary. but it did not necessarily leave many with high expectations. businesses that sell a lot of guns like walmart will also be in on some meetings. those groups are more likely to be influenced by the nra since they're making a big profit off those firearms. and they do not want to appear too entrenched in the white house's anti-gun push

there is a potential right now. yeah. and the obama administration should have seen this coming. they could have somehow and still can send out signals of what they intend to do with these higher decisions and the departure of nancy ann diparlo means there have got to be more women in the pipeline that the obama administration will appoint. i don't see how they can't be doing it because women were the backbone of the obama support for reelection. >> if we look at modern times and what past precedences have done, we look at president george w. bush increasing the number of women in his cabinet for 19% of his first term and the 24% in his second. president bill clinton saw the percentage of women rise from 27 to 44%. do you think that this could be the first time that we don't see the needle moving forward for a second term administration if president obama doesn't make some really sharp moves now to correct the diversity problem? >> think the pressure will be on for him to make sure that we don't see white men across the board the way we've seen in these early appointments. this is the piece of t

[applause] >> john brennan also talks about the use of drone strikes and counter-terrorism strategies since the debt of osama bin laden. from april of last year, this is just over one hour. >> i very much appreciate the opportunity to discuss president obama's counterterrorism strategy. then senator obama discussed how he would bring the war in iraq to an end and focus on the war that has to be one, the war against al qaeda, particularly in the troubled region of afghanistan and pakistan. he said we would ca

the message chuck hagel has been sending for years on this. the obama administration has been pretty tough on iran behind the scenes. hagel has been consistent himself, saying look, we cannot allow a nuclear iran, war should not be our first choice, and that also is consistent with the president. the president began by thinking perhaps he could negotiate more with ahmadinejad than has proven to be the case. he's evolved on this issue. my guess is chuck hagel as secretary of defense will reflect that evolution. >> there's one other thing i want to ask you each about. this is relevant -- well, we'll ask you whether you think it's relevant in terms of timing. in terms of topic i think this is relevant. the number of sexual assaults in the military each year is about 19,000. it is a serious issue. there are women in the military now and in 1996, when running for senate, the literature from chuck hagel reportedly said quote, i am pro-life with one exception, the life of the mother. now, who knows, people agree and disagree with that. i'm simply curious about democrats are not noticing that, tal

the obama administration as politico points out today, even reviving this dispute over leaks or alleged leaks out of the white house. are we not paying enough attention to brennan when, again, there were actual protests outside the white house yesterday regarding his nomination? >> well, in terms of the confirmation process, what doesn't -- protests outside the white house matter a lot less than protests inside capitol hill. it's just the nature of the beast and how they get confirmed. i think it's interesting that it first brennan was kind of seen as a sure thing and now maybe not so much. a little bit of criticism but i doubt the level of rancor will be anything like to see in the chuck hagel hearings. that's where the big show is going to be. >> you have writers, though, making a great point. making the point as a progressive, as a liberal that perhaps here we are at a time when questions about torture or alleged torture and interrogation has gone by the wayside for the political battle and people complaining about chuck hagel and to be confirmed or not, republican, democrats that i

them at the cia. brennan shaped the obama administration's policy on drones, using them more often and with more lethal results. these two questions certainly will be coming up at john brennan's confirmation hearingings at a time when challenging cabinet picks is becoming routine. >> used to just be supreme court justices who inspired these sort of partisan free for alls. now it is bleeding down into a president's cabinet picks as well. >> i want to bring back tom juneau, writes for esquire magazine. we talked so extensively about drones. wrote this phenomenal piece in esquire back in the summer. question number one being, you know, during the confirmation hearings, do you think it will be more of a defending, that john brennan will be defending his use of drones or distancing himself from it? >> i don't know if he has to defend it. it seems -- there really is no force within the congress who is anti-drone who i think is -- i think that this is an opportunity to make him defend the drone program, but i don't know if that's going to come up. >> you don't think people in your piece w

't there more prominent women being looked at in these positions? that may not be the obama administration's fault. it may be a fault of why aren't these women being promoted more to begin with why is sus afternoon rice pretty much the only person being mentioned for secretary of state? there should be more women since women make up more than half the population. it's getting better that they are at least mentioned for many. for many years obviously there were no women in the cabinet. but it's not good enough. i think the obama administration is saying we are noticing you are not putting women in, i think is important. >> amanda, why didn't we see the same kind of reaction particularly from the right, you know, when bush was approximatelypresident? i found it kind of striking yesterday on "meet the press"that, you know, mike murphy and hailee barber were making shots. >> on diversity. >> exactly. it's just -- it kind of begs the question of credibility from the attackers. >> uh-huh. >> do you think it's a fair point? >> well, i think that -- i mean this may say a

of the obama administration, president obama was elected, there were doubts about his national security experience. it was quite natural for him to pick then senator clinton to be secretary of state and keep bob gates on as secretary of defense. i think he thinks in the second term, he is not running for reelection. he has had experience, so he is much more inclined to pick somebody who is comfortable with, which is senator chuck hagel and senator john kerry. they got along in the senate, so presumably there will get along in the administration. i would add that i do think that one has to ask why, for example, the president is willing to make a flight out of the nomination? i do think the fundamental reason is that secretary chuck hagel --senator chuck hagel would agree, i think both he and the president are in lock step. one of the things that should be done in the hearings for the nomination is the did more about where this administration is going when it thinks about american power and leadership. it is finding good to talk about the limits of power. everybody's to understand. then i
